CHAOS GUITARS – MASTER GLOSSARY
Understanding Comes First
Most players are taught what to do.
Very few are taught how things actually work.
This isn’t just a list of definitions—
it’s the language behind the Chaos System.
If you understand these concepts, you stop guessing.
You start seeing what’s actually happening.
And once you see it—
everything else gets easier.
CHAOS SYSTEM CONCEPTS
How a guitar actually functions as a system
System
The interaction of all components affecting how a guitar functions, including string path, tension, friction, and contact points.
Failure Point
The specific location where the system breaks down, preventing proper function.
String Path
The complete route a string travels from tuner to bridge.
Friction Point
Any location where a string encounters resistance (nut, saddles, string trees).
Stability System
The combined function of tuners, nut, bridge, and string path that determines tuning stability.
Binding
A condition where a string cannot move freely, often at the nut or bridge.
Return to Pitch
The ability of a string to return to correct pitch after bending or tuning.
System Balance
All components working together without resistance or conflict.
CORE PLAYABILITY & SETUP
Action
The height of the strings above the frets.
Fret Buzz
A buzzing sound caused by a string contacting a fret unintentionally.
Neck Relief
The slight forward curvature of the neck that allows clean string vibration.
Truss Rod
An adjustable rod used to control neck relief.
Fret Wear
Flattening or grooves in frets from use.
Fret Sprout
Sharp fret ends caused by low humidity.

TUNING & STABILITY
Tuning Stability
The ability of a guitar to stay in tune and return to pitch.
Standard Tuning
E A D G B E
Down-Tuning
Lowering pitch below standard.
Drop Tuning
Lowering the lowest string relative to the others.
Open Tuning
Open strings form a chord.
Nut
Controls string spacing and height at the headstock.
Nut Binding
Strings catching in nut slots, preventing smooth movement.
Bridge
Anchors strings and affects feel and stability.
Saddle
Contact point controlling height and intonation.
Intonation
Accuracy of pitch across the fretboard.
TUNING STABILITY (ADVANCED)
Friction (String Movement)
Resistance encountered as a string moves across contact points.
Pitch Jumping
Sudden pitch changes caused by binding.
Ping (Nut Noise)
Audible snap when a string releases from binding.
Drift
Gradual loss of tuning stability during playing.
ELECTRONICS & SIGNAL BASICS
Pickup
Converts string vibration into electrical signal.
Single-Coil Pickup
Bright tone, prone to hum.
Humbucker
Dual-coil pickup that reduces noise and increases output.
Pickup Height
Distance between pickup and strings affecting tone and output.
Potentiometer (Pot)
Control for volume or tone.
Tone Capacitor
Shapes high-frequency roll-off.
Ground Hum
Noise caused by improper grounding.
Shielding
Material used to reduce interference.
MODS & ADVANCED CONCEPTS
Series Wiring
Higher output, stronger mids.
Parallel Wiring
Cleaner tone, lower output.
Coil Split
Turns a humbucker into a single-coil style sound.
Push/Pull Pot
Adds switching functions.
MAINTENANCE & CARE
Setup
Adjustments made to balance playability and stability.
Humidity Damage
Issues caused by improper moisture levels.
Acclimation
Allowing a guitar to adjust to environment changes.
BENCH CONCEPTS (CHAOS LANGUAGE)
This is how we think at the bench. Not just what we do—how we approach problems.
“Start at the failure point”
Diagnose the cause before making adjustments.
“Fix the system, not the symptom”
Address root problems, not surface issues.
“The guitar is fighting you”
Resistance caused by friction or poor setup.
“Controlled chaos”
A guitar that is both fully functional and visually personalized.
FINAL NOTE
This isn’t just a glossary.
It’s the language of the Chaos System.
If you understand this, you understand how your guitar actually works.
Everything else builds from here.
